Gareth Southgate resigns as England manager after Euro 2024 heartbreak
The England men’s team coach, Gareth Southgate, has made his resignation known.
In the European Championship 2024 final, Spain defeated the Three Lions squad on Sunday, prolonging their 58-year trophy drought.
In the immediate wake of that loss, Southgate stayed silent on his future, but on Tuesday morning, he made it clear that he was stepping down in an emotional address to England supporters.
It was the greatest honor of my life to play for and manage the England national team as a proud Englishman. I gave it everything I had because it meant the world to me,” he remarked.
But a shift and a fresh start are needed. My final match as England’s coach was Sunday’s final versus Spain in Berlin.
“In 2011, I joined the FA with the goal of enhancing English football.” I was surrounded by amazing people who really thanked me for their support throughout that time, which included eight years as the England coach.”Steve Holland was the greatest person to have by my side. He was outstanding and one of the most gifted instructors of his period.”
“I had the privilege of leading a fantastic group of players in 102 games as captain. They were all valuable assets to their country in numerous ways, and they were all happy to wear the Three Lions on their shirts.
The team we’ve sent to Germany has a ton of intriguing young players, and they have a chance to win the championship that we’re all after. They have my utmost admiration, and I hope we can help the FA, the players, and the team at St George’s Park. who realize the power of football to effect positive change and who work hard every day to develop English football. An extra special thank you to the staff for eight years of unwavering support to the players and me. They are the incredible team behind the team, and I am so appreciative of their dedication and hard work every day.
“Our supporters are the best in the world, and I am really grateful for their support. I am and always will be an England supporter.”
“I’m excited to watch and rejoice as the players continue to forge new bonds, inspire the country, and make unforgettable memories.”
“Thank you, England, for everything.”
More than in any other match in the history of the national team, Southgate has guided England to two major finals.
The players loved him and reiterated their desire for him to stay throughout Euro 2024. He is widely credited with reviving the spirit required to make the Three Lions consistent contenders.
Although Southgate’s contract was set to expire in December of next year, the FA will start looking for a replacement as soon as he decides to step down.
