Joshua Zirkzee reveals what he said to Kobbie Mainoo at Euro 2024
Joshua Zirkzee, a forward for Manchester United, has disclosed that during their brief conversation following last week’s Euro 2024 semi-final, he said to Kobbie Mainoo, “See you soon”.
In stoppage time, Zirkzee made his debut for the Netherlands as a senior international, coming off the bench. Mainoo had played nearly the whole game for England at the same time. Then, after the last whistle, the two were seen chatting.
Zirkzee had been in talks for some weeks at that point and had already confirmed his destination to United; in January, he had initially expressed interest in the Dutchman for 90 minutes. Reports of a payment structuring deal between United and Bologna surfaced the day after the semi-final, and that evening he was on a plane to England.
Zirkzee was asked what Mainoo had said to him on the field in Dortmund during a club media picture shoot after he was announced as a United player on Sunday.
“He merely inquired about my attendance. Zirkzee clarified, “I said, ‘See you soon after the final.'”
The 23-year-old former Bayern Munich player’s shirt number for the upcoming campaign is yet unknown, although Anthony Martial’s number nine is up for grabs. At Bologna, Zirkzee wore that shirt, but Rasmus Hojlund might have considered switching from 11.
Zirkzee is anticipated to support Hojlund in the revamped United offensive line. Both players are of comparable physical build, but Zirkzee is known for his creativity and dribbling, and he has been compared to Ronaldinho. Hojlund, on the other hand, is more of an Erling Haaland-style penalty area bulldozer.
He provides United manager Erik ten Hag with a variety of options, possibly substituting for Hojlund in a one-man striker system or occasionally playing alongside the Dane.
