Thomas Muller retires from international duty after Euro 2024
After the European Championship in 2024, Thomas Muller announced his retirement from the German national team.
In a tournament where the 34-year-old was only allowed to make two substitute appearances under Julian Nagelsmann’s direction, Muller made his 131st appearance for his nation during the quarterfinal loss to Spain.
The 34-year-old confirmed that he was ending his international career with an emotional farewell video that he shared on Monday morning.
“I could never have imagined all of this when I played my first international match more than 14 years ago,” Muller remarked. “Today I bid farewell to the German flag after 131 international games and 45 goals.”
Müller not only scored 10 goals at the World Cup, which he won in 2014, but he also holds the third-most caps for the German national team ever, behind only Lothar Matthäus (150) and Miroslav Klose (137).
Nagelsmann expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am grateful to have been able to accompany Thomas in part of his career, with the national team and at Bayern Munich.” Working with him was enjoyable.
“Thomas is an ardent professional who still has the same enthusiasm for football as he did when he first started.” Not only did he provide athletic brilliance to our European Championship team, but he also added leadership, maturity, and a recognizable presence. Thomas struck me as a very cerebral athlete on the football field, as well as emotionally and fundamentally. Even though I’m sorry he’s leaving, I sincerely hope Thomas will continue to influence German football in the future, both as a player for FC Bayern Munich and in other capacities. The national squad will miss him terribly.”
Toni Kroos, a midfielder for Germany, too said goodbye to the game after his elimination from the 2024 European Championship.
